A Possessed egy amerikai death/thrash metal együttes, amelyet 1983-ban alapítottak a San Francisco Bay Area térségében. Gyors játékstílusuk és Jeff Becerra torokhangú éneke révén gyakran emlegetik őket az első death metal zeneként, és utat nyitottak a 80-as évek death metal színtere előtt.
A Beyond the Gates / The Eyes of Horror című válogatás 1987-ben jelent meg a Century Media kiadónál CD-n, műanyag tokozásban. Az album 16 felvételt tartalmaz, köztük a címadó Beyond the Gates és The Eyes of Horror dalokat, valamint a majdnem héperces No Will to Live című hosszabb tételt. Ez az anyag a zenekar thrash és death metal műfajban végzett úttörő munkájának folytatását dokumentálja.
A megjelenés idején az együttest Jeff Becerra énekes-basszusgitáros, Mike Sus dobos, valamint Mike Torrao és Larry LaLonde gitárosok alkották. LaLonde később a Primus együttes tagjaként vált ismertté.
