A The Police egy háromtagú brit new wave együttes volt, amely stílusában ötvözte a rock, a reggae, a punk és a jazz elemeit. A 80-as évek elején a világ legnépszerűbb zenekarai közé tartozott, és pályafutása során világszerte több mint 50 millió albumot adott el. A Rolling Stone magazin a 100 legjobb előadó listáján a 70. helyre sorolta a The Police-t.
A Synchronicity album 1983 júniusában jelent meg az A&M kiadónál, és ez lett az együttes kereskedelmileg legsikeresebb lemeze. Az album címe és a dalszövegek nagy része Arthur Koestler The Roots of Coincidence (1972) című könyvéből merített ihletet, amely C. G. Jung szinkronicitás-elméletével foglalkozik. A korábbi The Police-albumokhoz képest a reggae-hatások háttérbe szorultak, teret engedve a gazdagabb produkciónak és a hangsúlyosabb szintetizátor-használatnak. Az album legnagyobb slágerei közé tartozik az Every Breath You Take, a King of Pain, a Wrapped Around Your Finger és a Synchronicity II. Az 1984-es Grammy-díjkiosztón az album öt jelölésből három díjat nyert, többek között az év albuma kategóriában is jelölték. A Synchronicity lett a zenekar ötödik és egyben utolsó stúdióalbuma.
Az album megjelenésének idején a felállást Sting énekes-basszusgitáros, Andy Summers gitáros és Stewart Copeland dobos alkotta.
