Az album Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds 1978 júniusában jelent meg a Columbia kiadónál dupla CD-ként, 15 dallal. H. G. Wells 1898-as A világok harca című regényének progresszív rock adaptációja, amely a viktoriánus újságíró nézőpontjából meséli el a történetet. A mű narráción, vezérmotívumokon és rímelt dalszöveges dallamokon alapul. A narrátor Richard Burton színész, az énekesek Justin Hayward, David Essex, Phil Lynott, Julie Covington és Chris Thompson. Az Egyesült Királyságban az album bestsellerré vált.
