A Big Country egy skót rockegyüttes, amelyet 1981-ben alapítottak Dunfermline-ban. Hangjukat, amelyet a skót folk- és katonazene ihletett, a duda és hegedű hangját idéző sajátos gitárszound jellemzi. A nyolcvanas évek new wave és alternatív rock képviselőiként kerültek a szélesebb közönség tudatába.
A Without the Aid of a Safety Net című album 1994-ben jelent meg az együttes első élőalbumaként, és a glasgow-i Barrowland Ballroomban 1993. december 29-én tartott koncertjüket rögzíti. A háromlemezes vinyl kiadás a The Buffalo Skinners című, akkoriban aktuális stúdiólemezről származó dalokat tartalmazza, köztük az Alone és Ships című szerzeményeket, valamint a korábbi időszak slágerei közül az In a Big Country, Look Away vagy Fields of Fire című dalokat. Nem hiányoznak a Rockin' in the Free World és Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) feldolgozások sem.
A felvétel idején a Big Country tagjai Stuart Adamson (ének, gitár), Bruce Watson (gitár, ének), Tony Butler (basszusgitár) és Mark Brzezicki (dob) voltak.
