A Dream Theater egy 1985-ben alapított amerikai progresszívmetál-együttes, amely a műfaj legjelentősebb képviselői közé tartozik. Zenéjére a heavymetál riffek, a technikai virtuozitás és a progresszív rockra jellemző összetett kompozíciós szerkezetek jellemzők.
Az Awake Demos 1994 című album 2006-ban jelent meg az Inside Out Music kiadónál, és 11 demófelvételt tartalmaz. Egyedülálló betekintést nyújt az együttes alkotói folyamatába az Awake című harmadik stúdióalbumuk készítésének idejéből. A felvételek között hosszabb progresszív kompozíciókat találunk, mint például a Scarred (11:16), a The Mirror (10:13) vagy a Voices (9:31), de rövidebb dalokat is, mint például a The Silent Man vagy a Lie.
A demófelvételek idején az együttest John Petrucci (gitár, háttérvokál), James LaBrie (ének), John Myung (basszusgitár, Chapman stick), Mike Portnoy (dob, ütőhangszerek, háttérvokál), Jordan Rudess (billentyűs hangszerek, continuum, lap steel gitár) és Steve Stone alkották.
