A Grateful Dead egy amerikai rockegyüttes, amelyet 1965-ben alapítottak Palo Altóban, Kaliforniában, és eklektikus stílusáról ismert, amely a rock, blues, folk, country, bluegrass, jazz és psychedelia elemeit ötvözi. Improvizatív élő fellépéseiről és Deadheads nevű elkötelezett rajongótáboráról vált híressé.
Az American Beauty, az együttes ötödik stúdióalbuma 1970 novemberében jelent meg a Warner Bros. Records kiadónál, és folytatta a korábbi Workingman's Dead album folk-rock és country rock hangzását. Az album 33 felvételt tartalmaz három CD-n, köztük olyan klasszikus dalokat, mint a Box of Rain, Friend of the Devil, Sugar Magnolia, Ripple és Truckin'. A dalszövegek nagy részét Robert Hunter írta. 2003-ban a Rolling Stone magazin az albumot a 258. helyre sorolta az 500 legjobb album listáján.
1970-ben a felállást Ron „Pigpen” McKernan, Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Tom Constanten, Bruce Hornsby, Robert Hunter és Rob Wasserman alkották.
