A Grateful Dead egy 1965-ben Kaliforniában alakult amerikai rockegyüttes, amely eklektikus stílusáról volt ismert, ötvözve a rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, country, jazz és pszichedelia elemeit. A Workingman's Dead, az együttes negyedik stúdióalbuma 1970 júniusában jelent meg a Warner Bros. Records kiadónál, és a Rolling Stone magazin az év legjobb lemezének választotta. Az album az American Beauty című folytatásával együtt eltért a pszichedelikus kísérletezéstől, és Jerry Garcia és Robert Hunter észak-amerikai folk-rock dalszerzői stílusa felé fordult.
