A Permanent Waves album 1980 januárjában jelent meg az Anthem Records kiadónál, a zenekar hetedik stúdióalbumaként. A lemez a modernebb, rádióbarát hangzás felé való elmozdulást jelentett, és addig a zenekar leggyorsabban eladott albumává vált. Az albumon megszólalnak a The Spirit of Radio, a Freewill és a monumentális Natural Science című dalok. Ez a jubileumi deluxe kiadás 5 CD-t tartalmaz 35 felvétellel, beleértve a remasterezett eredetit és koncertváltozatokat.
A megjelenés idején a zenekar tagjai Geddy Lee (basszusgitár, billentyűs hangszerek, ének), Alex Lifeson (elektromos gitár, háttérvokál) és Neil Peart (dob, ütőhangszerek) voltak.
