A Slayer egy amerikai thrash metal együttes a kaliforniai Huntington Parkból, amelyet 1981-ben alapítottak. A thrash metal úgynevezett „nagy négyesének” tagja a Metallica, az Anthrax és a Megadeth mellett. Gyors és agresszív stílusuk meghatározta a műfajt a nyolcvanas években.
A Hell Awaits album évfordulós kiadása 3 CD-n tartalmazza az eredeti lemez felújított stúdiófelvételeit, kiegészítve két élő felvételt tartalmazó CD-vel, amelyek egy 1985-ös bochumi koncertet örökítenek meg. Az eredeti album 1985-ben jelent meg, és a thrash metal alapkövei közé tartozik. A dalok között szerepel a Hell Awaits, a Kill Again, a Crypts of Eternity és a Necrophiliac. A bochumi élő felvételek a csapat korai időszakának nyers energiáját dokumentálják.
Az eredeti album megjelenésének idején a Slayert Kerry King és Jeff Hanneman (gitár), Tom Araya (basszusgitár és ének), valamint Dave Lombardo (dobok) alkották.
